How to Build the Right Boards
Hosting the right boards on your profile is crucial, learn how to build the right boards for best results.
Why Pinterest Boards
Creating the right Pinterest boards can be overwhelming and hard to navigate, especially if you use the same profile for your personal pinning. Your profile is a host of boards that send information about your brand and direct the algorithm how and where to distribute your content.
The board title or name and description work together to direct traffic to your business by sending a specific message and getting your content in front of the exact audience so it’s important to be thorough and thoughtful.
I see a lot of profiles that skip this essential part of optimizing their profile and therefore losing out on the potential of scaling their business organically.
There are a few places where your pins can pop up. So let’s break it down. Your home feed is the home page that appears when you open the app or desktop. People you follow, people with content you’ve recently search for, or curated other content Pinterest thinks you will like will appear here.
The search engine is where you can use search terms to discover content you are looking for, aka keywords. So users can type in their search and if your content/description is related, your pin appears in the search feed.
Then you have any created pins that you have uploaded either directly on Pinterest or through a scheduling tool. These pins should include keywords, description and links back to your brand and will appear on other’s feeds, search or your own profile.
And finally, saved. Which is anything you have saved or pinned to your profile. That can include other content or your own.
These are all why it is crucial to have a properly optimized board which establishes your profile, so let’s get to work! How do we do that?
Step 1: Create a Board
Creating a board is simple. Open the board to your profile and click the +, then Board option. A new page will pop up and you’re ready to release your secret weapon, keywording!
- Use a specific title with a minimum of 2 or 3 keywords to describe what this board is about. Avoid cutesy or cool branding topography (like spaces between letters). Examples of a strong board title might look like this Easy Chicken Dinner Ideas or Summer Fashion for Women.
- Set your board to secret. This allows for the board to be private and you can click this anytime to have the board be “hidden” if it is no longer relevant to your brand. If you are converting your profile from personal to business, this is a great idea to keep content you want but don’t want apart of your current brand.
- You’ll have an opportunity to add More Ideas – more pins you can save to your board to help Pinterest understand the content of the board, however you want to keep in mind how much content you have for each board so that the board is full of mostly your own content, not others.
- The organize option allows you to move, copy or delete any pins in that board.
- Now the Edit button is where all the action happens. This allows you to add board cover (a picture to represent the board) and descriptions to this board, which is crucial to an optimized board.
Step 2: Add your Description
Your board description is an element that helps Pinterest identify and target your content in front of the right audience. Now, it doesn’t always mean it will rank higher in search, but it is a great way to cover all your SEO bases on the platform. Beforehand make sure you use the keyword search engine or navigate trends so you can easily add keyword descriptions to fit your niche. Avoid keyword stuffing by just listing a bunch of words or phrases, but try to write specific sentences that flow yet have strong SEO mixed within. An example may look like this: A board that features trendy outfit ideas for the busy mom. Find favorite staple pieces for your summer wardrobe from bathing suits, shorts, tanks and sandals at affordable prices. Summer fashion looks that are vibrant, full of color and versatile perfect for that capsule wardrobe. | Brand Name Here
If you noticed at the end there, I left the brand name. I like to leave your signature to label every board and just get the brand name on repeat and help Pinterest recognize your audience in every way possible.
Step 3: How Many Boards Should I Have?
It all depends where you are currently in your Pinterest marketing journey. If just starting 5-10 quality boards is a great start. As you grow organically with time, you naturally will build on those boards while creating more content.
Now if you already have lots of content and a more established business, then you need to consider having 20-50 boards. You can create new boards as needed and can also be a process overtime as you navigate your marketing plan. Be sure to optimize any old boards or hide irrelevant content, it’s important to keep your profile branded. Be sure to audit all boards early on in your marketing journey, it’s a little time consuming but essential.
Summary:
Here you have it, the ins of creating a branded profile with your boards. Don’t get lazy when creating boards and forget to add the description, be intentional. Remember this is an opportunity fr you to leverage your brand on the Pinterest platform.
